Pour ce troisième podcast, je vous présente un formidable livre sur la construction en hauteur (tours, gratteciels...) écrit par Thierry Paquot. Thierry Paquot est un philosophe, professeur à l'Institut d'Urbanisme de Paris, contributeur à la revue Urbanisme et auteur de plusieurs autres ouvrages. Il participe également à certaines des émissions de France Culture sur l'urbanisme mais je vous avoue que je n'en ai écouté aucune pour le moment ... (ce n'est pas bien, je sais)
Alors, pourquoi avoir choisi ce livre ?
J'ai été tout d'abord intriguée par son titre, en passant devant à la bibliothèque: "Pourquoi s'obstiner à construire des tours?". Cela m'a tout de suite fait penser aux divers débats parisiens entendus sur le "faut il ou non construire des tours à Paris?" / "Une tour triangle est elle vraiment plus belle qu'une tour cylindrique?"/ "Paris doit s'équiper de gratteciels si elle veut rester compétitive" / blablabla.
Bon, cela étant dit, il y avais aussi une raison plus "personnelle" à ce choix de lecture. Je travaille depuis la rentrée dans la 13ème arrondissement (j'ai posté quelques photos de ce quartier sur Instagram d'ailleur ;) ) et suis fascinée/ stupéfaite/ parfois-choquée par l'aspect général de ce bout de Paris. C'est moderne, métallique, bétonné souvent austère mais aussi un peu mystérieux et agréable (à force d'y marcher entre midi et deux je trouve quelques charmes -bien cachés- à cet arrondissement). Sur ce, je vous laisse découvrir le podcast en français ou en anglais (et ouiiii ! Le blog se veut de plus en plus international compte tenu des origines très diverses des visiteurs et followers)

For the 3rd podcast of the blog I selected a formidable book about building vertically (towers, skyscrapers...) written by Thierry Paquot. Thierry Paquot is a philosopher, professor at the Urbanism Institute of Paris, contributor to the magazine Urbanism and author of several other books. He even participated to radio emissions broadcasted on France Culture (a cultural french radio which you probably never heard about if you're not French -bouhou-). And I must admit I still haven't listen to this (my bad...).
So, why did I chose this text ?
First, I noticed its title while walking in the library : "Why do we abstain from building towers ?". It immediately reminded me of the several parisian debates related to :"Should we or shouldn't we build a tower in Paris ?" / "Is a triangle tower more beautiful than a cylindric one ?" / "Should Paris have skyscrapers to remain competitive ?" / blablabla.
That being said, there is also a more "personal "reason to this lecture's choice. I started working in the 13th arrondissement since september (I even posted pics of this neighborhood on Instagram hehe ;) ) and have even been fascinated / astounded / sometimes-shocked by the general layout of this area in Paris. It's really modern, metallic, concrete designed often cold and austere while mysterious and charming (by dint of walking there every lunch breaks I found some hidden charms to this arrondissement ahah). So, I will let you listen to the podcast (in French or in English) !
